MUMBAI: Sandhya Deepam, one of Amrita TV?s heritage programmes and the standard bearer of our spiritual legacy has stamped the pages of television history with its seal, having recently passed the momentous signpost of 1800 episodes. The show which goes on air at the twilight hour, when the devout gather in the hum of prayers and the flame of piety lights up the dusk, is telecast everyday of the week at 6.30pm.

The daily episodes are anchored by Romi Sreekumar, a Vanita Ratnam winner whose composed and serene way of presentation and refined narration of anecdotes has earned universal appreciation; she has been at the helm of the show for 1500 episodes which has set a new record in Malayalam television anchoring.

Each episode consists of numerous segments that reinforces the worshipful mood of the eventide: Namasankeerthanam, a repeated chanting of the name of the Almighty in the radiance of the lighted lamps and burning of incense at sundown ;Jyotirgamaya, in which L.Gireesh Kumar the founder chairman of Shripuram Tantra Research Centre who teaches and propagates Tantra sastra clearly and succinctly annotates Devi Mahatmyam; elucidation of the verses of the Bhagavadam by Kandamangalam Parameshwaran Namboothiri; melodious rendering of the eternal hymns of Shrimad Bhagavadam by Priya R Pai, noted ghazal singer and Rajashree Warrier, Bharatanatyam exponent and Carnatic musician ; Deeparadhana, that brings heartwarming visuals of the deeparadhana rituals from ancient temples around Kerala.

Over the 1800 episodes, telecast over almost 5 years, the show has systematically interpreted the philosophical wisdom in the form of hymns and incantations of many of our divine scriptural texts: Sree Lalitha Sahasranamam, Harinama keerthanam, Njanappana, Dashasloki ,Narayaneeyam and so on.

As changing ways of lifestyle and mindsets almost snuff out hallowed customs and ancient rituals from our daily routine, Sandhya Deepam will help to continue to light the wick of tradition in our lives and suffuse the sacred sunset hour with the glow of spiritualism.
