  • NewsX Holds ?Paradox of Prosperity? - A Panel discussion on ?Can Big Business save India?

Submitted by ITV Production on Nov 17, 2010

MUMBAI: NewsX recently concluded a panel debate on ?Paradox of Prosperity - Can Big Business Save India? on November 12, 2010 at Hotel Intercontinental Eros, New Delhi. The panelists of the debate were Dr. Subhramaniam Swamy - President of Janta Party and economist, Preety Kumar - MD AMROP India, Madhu Kishwar - Social Activist & editor Manushi magazine and Sanjeev Sanyal - President, Sustainable Planet Institute. The show was moderated by Mr. Jehangir S. Pocha , Co Founder, NewsX and the discussion covered various topics on economic growth, education, business investment, employment opportunities and the role of private & public sector in the Indian Economy.

The recording will be telecast on 20 November at 5 pm and repeated on 21 November at 2 pm.

Mr. Subhramaniam Swamy said that, ?The government bureaucrats do not like to lose power and so they are against privatization. There is no doubt that world over where the government has only an umpire?s role to play, economy performs much better than those where govt. itself is a participant. We are entering into the knowledge economy era where knowledge is more important. Innovation is what really drives economic growth. We have a transitional society and I think along with this privatization you really need much more infusion of talent into politics so that govt. gets high quality people.?

Preety was of the opinion that, ?A private enterprise always comes with a profit objective. Also a private sector has no responsibility in the development of the nation, this is the government?s job and they should take care of it.? She further added, ?For a country to develop, most people believe that prosperity is about money & income but the actual prosperity would come by making people skilled & productive.?

The debate revolved around questions like the daunting task for India in basic and much neglected areas for uplifting the poor in rural and urban areas, is the concentrated growth of large business houses really the answer? Issues like liberalization has lead to creation of wealth along with growing inequality. Is this an inevitable outcome where the stress is solely on growth of industry, service and IT sectors to the gross neglect of agricultural sector?

Though most of the panelists were in favor of privatization, Madhu believed that both big business houses and small business players should co-exist and they should be allowed to fairly compete with each other. . At the end of the discussion there was a Q&A round where the guests shared their views on the topic and asked questions to the panelists.

IMN News is the new brand identity that the premier English news channel NewsX will soon assume. The new look of the channel will be unveiled soon, and be accompanied with a similarly redesigned website, IPTV service and mobile TV.
