  • Tata Elxsi's pioneering special effects for Videocon's latest TVC

Submitted by ITV Production on Nov 12, 2009

MUMBAI: Visual Computing Labs (VCL), a division of Tata Elxsi Ltd and a leading animation and visual communications venture / studio has delivered pioneering special effects for Videocon‘s latest television commercial (TVC) for its new range of washing machines.

The ad was conceived to communicate the fact that the new Videocon washing machine has the power of Quanta Wash with the edge of UV ray technology that kills such micro germs. This idea is conveyed using various 3D animation characters.

The challenge was designing four different characters, with each character representing a person wearing the garment and his / her personal traits and attitudes towards life.

These attitudes / mannerisms had to be further infused with vigour and made to ‘come alive‘ through the performances of the four characters in the animation. This unique combination is what orchestrated the main message, which has come across dominantly through the ad and helped Videocon drive home its point effectively.

To fit the animation seamlessly onto the live action person‘s T-shirt and actually model the T-shirt / shirt complete with folds that matched the ones in the live footage was extremely challenging to say the least.

Speaking about the creation of the commercial, Tata Elxsi Ltd Visual Computing Labs Animation Director Suhael Merchant said, "The use of animation in advertising is fast becoming a potent force for companies to reach out to the target audience.

"The uniqueness of this ad film was that even though animation was used as the medium to communicate, the characters for the film were absolutely regular animation characters. The integration of the animated characters being used as prints on various people‘s t-shirts and the seriousness of the film‘s message is what makes this ad stand out."

Since its inception, VCL has pioneered some of the finest animated and VFX work that has originated from India and garnered significant worldwide recognition. VCL has successfully delivered fully animated TVCs on a habitual basis for both Indian as well as global customers, the latest being the Kelloggs Honey Loops TVC.

The Himani TVC for the production house, Equinox also created by VCL won the FICCI BAF award this year for executing outstanding visual effects in the category of "Best VFX in a commercial". The division, in order to strengthen its foothold in the TVC arena has a dedicated team to work in tandem with TVC production houses, advertising agencies and end advertisers globally.

VCL has worked for well-known ad agencies and independent ad filmmakers in the past. Its portfolio includes advertisements for Cheetos, Pillsbury, Huggies, Fanta, and MSN Messenger, besides two Coke commercials for overseas audiences. The division has also worked on projects for Walt Disney, Sony Pictures Imageworks, Lions Gate, MGM and Digimation.

  • South Africa v England Live on Ten Sports

Submitted by ITV Production on Nov 12, 2009

MUMBAI: The England Cricket team begins a four tests and five one- day internationals series against South Africa. The tour kick starts with two International Twenty20 matches, warming up to the one -day games. This promises to be a closely fought series, and all the action can be seen live on Ten Sports. (Please check schedule)

Interestingly, the England squad has two South African born players in their side. One has already made a name for himself in the team and is now a crucial member - Kevin Pietersen. The other player, Jonathan Trott will be on his first tour back to the land of his birth. Five years ago Pietersen did not receive a warm welcome, but Jacques Kallis is of the opinion that Trott will not face a hostile reception, for his character is very different to Pietersens? overall outspoken demeanor. A lot has been made of Trotts? homecoming series, but what both sides will be looking for is supremacy and meeting the demands on a given day, be it T20, one-day or Test cricket.

For the visitors, a lot will be riding on arguably the most charismatic player in their side, Pietersen. He will make a return to international cricket after what has been the longest lay off in his playing career. The English Cricket board however have continually expressed the fact that they are not dependent on any one player. With Andrew Strauss at the helm of things and the ever silent but strong Andy Flower as cricket director, the England outfit seem prepared for the cricketing battles ahead.

Submitted by ITV Production on Nov 11, 2009

MUMBAI: Celebrated movie critic Omar Qureshi gives his opinion on the latest movies. Starting with ?Tum Mile? from the Bhatt camp; the film is set against the backdrop of the floods in Mumbai in 2005. The movie will certainly strike a chord with Mumbaikars (citizens of Mumbai) as the deluge had an impact on many a life in the city. The lead roles played by Emraan Hashmi and Soha Ali Khan sure make an interesting couple; besides, the music from the film has been ruling the charts with their soulful rendition.

The best of fairytale romance is here to stay? ?Aao Wish Karein? stars Aftab Shivdasani and his love interest played by the pretty Aamna Sheriff. The film is based on a typical fairy tale story of a twelve year old boy called Mickey. His life was picture perfect but one day, he finds out that he is adopted.

Omar Qureshi gives his take on the much hyped Hollywood movie ?2012?. Directed and written by Roland Emmerich, the film is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors. Starring John Cusack and Amanda Peet, 2012 takes the ?natural disasters foretold by ancient calendar? angle.

So tune in to ?The ZoOm Review Show? to find out which movie deserves a watch this Friday, November 13, 2009, 7:30pm only on ZoOm.
