  • Former British PM Tony Blair on CNN's 'Talk Asia'

Submitted by ITV Production on Aug 31, 2009

MUMBAI: It has been two years since former British Prime Minister Tony Blair left office. This week?s TALK ASIA follows him to China as he speaks to CNN?s John Vause on issues including tackling climate change, resolving the conflict in the Middle East, and on whether his legacy has been overshadowed by the war in Iraq.

Blair is in China to launch a project to bring affordable solar lighting to villages across the country. Working alongside Chinese movie star Jet Li through a partnership of their respective foundations, the aim is to have solar panels installed to promote clean energy use in Guiyang?s rural villages. He tells Vause how he has noticed a change in the Chinese government in tackling climate change. ?I think what brought change in policy in relation to China, is that they suddenly understood that economic progress and economic development, unless it put sustainability and appreciation of the environment at the heart of it, was never going to work.? He adds: ?The thing about the Chinese is when they do it, they?re going to do it.?

Appointed a Middle East peace envoy the day after leaving office, Blair also talks optimistically about a possible resolution to the conflict under the current Israeli government. ?Sometimes the person who, if you like, is supposedly more hard-line is the person that can deliver.? He says, ?So I think provided Prime Minister Netanyahu is genuinely prepared, in circumstances where the Palestinian state is going to be securely run, properly governed, if he?s prepared to commit to a Palestinian state then we can make peace. This is not an issue where it?s impossible to see a solution.?

He also refutes comments that he took the envoy role as atonement for the war in Iraq: ?I believe it?s important. I believe the Middle East is better off without a dictator like Saddam Hussein there, but I also believe in Middle East peace, and I always have done.? He adds: ?And the truth is, whether we like it or not in the West, and sometimes we don?t, the existence of this Israel-Palestine conflict is a major source of friction between the West and the Muslim world, between the West and the Arab world.?

Blair further reveals how his work in the Holy Land takes on extra significance for him as a Roman Catholic: ?If you?re someone from the Abraham faiths, then to be in the Holy Land, to be in and around the places that you read about and grew up with in the Bible is very inspiring.?

Some critics linked his personal faith with the decision to go to war in Iraq, but he tells Vause the two were unrelated: ?Are my politics and my values linked? Yes, of course they are. But I took those decisions for reasons that were not to do with religion, but to do with the belief that in each case it was right to protect people against the prospect or actuality of dictatorship.?

Blair also reveals on TALK ASIA whether he worries his legacy has been overshadowed by the decision to go to war with Iraq: ?It would worry me more, if I thought that I had flinched from taking a difficult decision on the basis that it was a difficult decision.? He adds: ?I tried to take the decisions for my country on the basis of what I thought was right. In the end, people can disagree and that?s life.?

  • US Open Tennis - Live on Ten Sports

Submitted by ITV Production on Aug 29, 2009

MUMBAI: Mumbai, August 28, 2009: The season?s final slam event, the US Open, begins with Roger Federer the overwhelming favourite to win yet again at Flushing Meadows. The Swiss has a formidable record at the event having won it 5 times in a row. The defending champion has been in brilliant touch this season winning the Wimbledon and the French Open. Back from a break after the birth of twin daughters, the Swiss showed he well prepared for another assault with an impressive win in the Cincinnati Masters in Ohio.

Federer?s bid for his 16th Grand Slam title will be live on Ten Sport from 31 August 2009.

Despite Federer?s dominance, the men?s contest is expected to be keenly fought with top players peaking at just the right moment. In the Rogers Cup in Toronto, the top 8 seeds reached the quarterfinals. In the Cincinnati Masters the top four seeds were contesting in the last four stage.

Federer?s biggest challenge is likely to come from Andy Murray with most expecting the two to clash in the final yet again this year. Murray lost the final in 2008 in straight sets but is a much improved player since and his performance this year has seen him move up to number two in the ATP rankings. The Scot has won 5 tournaments this year, earning over $3 million dollars in prize money. Despite all his success Murray is yet to win a major and will go all out to make amends in the season?s last grand slam.

Third seed Raphael Nadal has won 6 majors in his career but the Spaniard is still working hard to regain the form that saw him dominating last season. Nadal?s season began well this season as he beat Federer at the Australian Open to win his first grand slam on hard-court but tendonitis in his knee has since hampered his progress. A semi-final appearance in Cincinnati has given indications that the Mallorcan may again be a big threat for Federer. Another player looking to end the year on a high is Croatian Novak Djokovic. The world number three has won two tournaments this year but he may well have reserved his best for the last.

In the women?s draw, Dinara Safina is seeded number one but not many will rate her as the favourite. The Russian is yet to win a grand slam event. The punters? favourite will be American Serena Williams who is looking for her fourth US Open title. Williams is known to lift her game in the grand slam events and is looking for her third major this year having already won the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

The return of Kim Clijsters and Maria Sharapova will also be keenly watched. Sharapova suffered from a shoulder injury which threatened to end her career prematurely. The Russian returned to action in May and is looking good after an appearance in the final of the Rogers Cup in Toronto. Clijsters had retired due to injury and impending marriage. The 2005 champion believes she has the ability to compete with the best.

Indian fans will be keenly watching the progress of Sania Mirza in the singles. There are more chances for success in the doubles with both Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi being serious contenders.
