Plex Row: Studios experimenting with single-screen releases

MUMBAI: The clash between multiplexes and Hollywood studios over box-office revenue share is not showing any signs of respite.

After bouts of negotiations over the releases of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the two parties are now drawing swords for another battle.

Viacom18 Motion Pictures’ Captain America and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Final Destination 5 released only in single screens. This seems to be becoming a trend.

Last week, Fox Star Studios’ Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released only in single screens. Now, however, the movie is releasing in select multiplexes.

The struggle between the two parties originally came to the fore last month, during the release of Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2. But after a few rounds of talks, the issue was resolved and the last part of the franchise was released on schedule.

According to an MoU signed last year, the revenue sharing pattern between distributors and multiplexes was 50:50 in the first week, which would then be reduced to 42.5 per cent in the second week, followed by 37.5 per cent in the third week and 30 per cent in the fourth week.

But now, the multiplexes are demanding a 55 per cent share, reducing the distributor’s share to 45 per cent in the first week, 37.5 in the second, 32.5 in the third and 25.5 per cent in the fourth week.

The Hollywood studios are not ready to fall in line and are taking the bull by its horns.
