3G auction: Mumbai joins Delhi in the Rs 7 billion club

NEW DELHI: Bidding in thirteen of the 22 circles appears to have come to a stop even as Delhi continued its upward rise at the end of 58 rounds on the tenth day today with a bid of Rs 7.71 billion.

Mumbai also crossed the Rs 7 billion figure with a bid of Rs 7.09 billion, while Tamil Nadu peaked at Rs 6.83 billion, and the rest of Maharashtra had a bid of Rs 6.63 billion.

There is little likelihood for any more bids for Kerala, Punjab, Western Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Assam, Orissa, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, the North-East, and Bihar.

The bid for Gujarat closed at Rs 5.72 billion, marginally above yesterday’s bid.

Andhra Pradesh fared better with a bid for Rs 5.90 billion, but was lower than Karnataka’s closing bid of Rs 6.07 billion.

Kolkata received a bid of Rs 2.02 billion, while Kerala had a bid of Rs 2.32 billion.

While east Uttar Pradesh closed with a bid of Rs 2.47 billion, west Uttar Pradesh clocked Rs 2.59 billion. Punjab stopped at Rs 1.38 billion and Haryana closed at Rs 2.08 billion. Madhya Pradesh rose marginally to Rs 2.25 billion. Bihar closed at Rs 330.8 million.

The bids for some states remained unchanged: West Bengal at Rs 1.24 billion, Rajasthan at Rs 2.21 billion; Assam, Orissa and Jammu & Kashmir service areas and Himachal Pradesh at Rs 300 million each, and the north-east at Rs 303 million.

The telecom operators in the race are Aircel, Bharti Airtel, Etisalat DB Telecom, Idea Cellular, Reliance, S Tel, Tata Teleservices, Videocon Telecommunications and Vodafone Essar.

The successful bidders would be allowed to start commercial 3G operations from 1 September.
