Liberty Global likely to acquire German cable firm

MUMBAI: John Malone-promoted Liberty Global Inc. is contemplating to buy Germany‘s No. 3 cable company, Kabel Baden- Wuerttemberg GmbH.

According to Bloomberg, Liberty Global is considering the possibility of combining its Unitymedia GmbH with Kabel BW. The company has hired Goldman Sachs Group to advice them on the proposal.

Liberty Global had earlier paid around 2 billion Euros while assuming a debt of 1.5 billion Euros for acquiring Unitymedia.

Unitymedia, Germany‘s second-largest cable operator, has also previously expressed the intent of taking over Kabel BW.

Bloomberg reported that EQT Partners that owns 100 per cent of Kabel BW has hired JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank AG to advise them on a possible sale of the Heidelberg-based cable operator. Stockholm-based EQT had acquired Kabel BW in 2006 from Blackstone Group LP, for an unknown price.
