Gandu receives Grand Jury Prize at Seattle film fest

MUMBAI: Quashiq Mukherjee’s film, Gandu, won the Grand Jury Prize in New Directors competition at the 37th Seattle International Film Festival.

Mukherjee, who is also known as Q, received a cash prize of $2,500.

The unconventional movie impressed the jury members who said: “We chose to give the prize to a movie that bowled us over with its kinetic, brash humour and style-hoping dexterity, a portrait of tortured youth that refreshingly pokes fun at adolescent self-centeredness while simultaneously exploring the anger, despondency and malaise of a generation."

The festival, which was held from 19 May till 12 June, featured over 450 films from over 70 countries.

Gandu was presented under 2011 Panorama at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival and was premiered at the 2010 South Asian International Film Festival.

Mukherjee, who won National Award for his film ‘Love in India’ this year, is known for experimental films. He has directed over 50 commercials and runs ‘Overdose’, a production, design and music company.
