3 Idiots releasing in Korea this week

MUMBAI: Having made its mark in Taiwan where it ran for 29 weeks, Vidhu Vinod Chopra‘s 3 Idiots is being released in Korea this weekend.

The Aamir Khan- R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi-starrer will release in as many as 230 screens in the country.

The film will be released by Apex Entertainment and CJ Entertainment, the biggest domestic distributor in the Korean market. The 164-minute film, loosely adapted from Chetan Bhagat‘s best-seller novel ‘Five Point Someone‘, has been sub-titled in South Korean language.

The release of 3 Idiots in Korea seems to have been inspired from the success the film received in Taiwan where the film collected Rs 30 million.

It may be recalled that in recent history Karan Johar‘s My Name Is Khan (MNIK), distributed by Fox Star Studios, was released in two stages in Korea, initially in 12 screens that was later expanded to 250 screens after three weeks.

MNIK had set a benchmark by being the first Hindi film to be released in 66 countries through Fox Searchlight. The 165-minute MNIK, likewise, kicked off with 2,200 prints and gradually grew by another 500 prints in six months in non-traditional markets like Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan , Poland, Malaysia, Taiwan, China and Belgium.

Having realised that Indian films are going places, film production houses like UTV, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, Eros International and Reliance Big Pictures are now looking at Italy, Spain, Taiwan, China, South Korea and France for their forthcoming releases.
