Retrospective of Bhupen Hazarika to feature Hindi and Assamese films

Bhupen Hazarika

NEW DELHI: Five films in Hindi and Assamese with music by the late maestro Bhupen Hazairka are to be screened in a retrospective to be held in the capital this month.

The Festival will be held at Shakuntalam Theatre in Pragati Maidan from 18 to 24 May.

The Retro will include the Hindi films ‘Ek Pal‘ and ‘Rudaali‘ by eminent filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi apart from the Hindi film ‘Gandhi to Hitler‘ by Rajesh Ranjan Kumar.

The two Assamese films are ‘Memsaab‘ by Abdul Majid which will open the Festival and ‘Aparoopa‘ by the renowned Jahnu Barua.

Shakuntalam Theatre is facing closure as it was releasing contemporary films simultaneously with other theatres but at rates that were far below those charged by the multiplexes and this did not go down well with the distributor fraternity. Furthermore, lack of publicity led to empty halls and less profitability.
