Intelsat to offer satellite bandwidth to Qualcomm's MediaFLO

Satellite communications

MUMBAI: Satellite communications company Intelsat announced that it will provide transport services for Qualcomm's MediaFLO USA mobile broadcast television network. Intelsat will offer satellite bandwidth to MediaFLO's transmitter sites.

The deal gives MediaFLO another carrier option to transport its video and other traffic in remote areas or regions where fiber optic or cable bandwidth are not available or are too expensive.

An independent wireless industry analyst Peter Gorham said, "This is a nice fit for Intelsat. It does not require an additional investment for them. They are piggybacking on investments that they have already made."

aDespite the rapid growth of digital communications, the satellite industry has been racked by slow growth, the erosion of prices in some areas, the problem of excess capacity, and the threat of further consolidation.
