Trai's recommendations on 4G by mid-year: Sarma

NEW DELHI: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) is preparing to publish a consultation paper on 4G, even as the service providers have still not fulfilled their obligations relating to 3G and 2G which have run into controversies.

Trai chairman JS Sarma said the authority‘s recommendation on 4G services can be ready by the middle of this year, even as he refused to give any definite deadline while admiting that a pre- consultation paper was almost ready. He expected 4G to come to India by next year.

Speaking after unveiling ASSOCHAM - Deloitte study on Mobile Value Added Services (MVAS) here, he said Trai would look into the various aspects of 4G, including spectrum band allocation, quantum and modes of allotment to the operators before coming up with questions for the telecom industry to eventually decide the regulating guidelines.

He said 4G aims to provide a wide range of data rates up to ultra-broadband (gigabit-speed) Internet access to mobile as well as stationary users.
