North-East Monitor a programme focussing on Mizoram and its literacy levels will telecast on Doordarshan on Tuesday 8 June at 9.30 am on the National Channel (DD1).

The programme revolves around the northeastern state of Mizoram . The state although remote has a rather unique distinction of being the second highest literate state next to Kerala.

People of Mizoram seem to be transforming themselves into a model community in a little over four generations. So much so that Mizoram today has a record 88.49 percent literacy rate,second only to Kerala. The literacy rate in Kerala according to the 2001 census is marginally higher than Mizoram at 89.91 percent. The national literacy rate is just 52.21 percent.

British Baptist missionaries, William Frederick Savidge and J.H.Lorrain, who first landed in the hills of Mizoram sometime in 1894 and very soon reduced the oral Mizo language to a written form, taught a number of locals to read and write, besides introducing schools and imparting education for the people.

Today it produces the highest number of IAS and IPS officers from the northeast region.
