Aval tops 5th National Short & Documentary Film fest awards

MUMBAI: Aval (She), a Tamil short film directed by Prashanth Kanattur on female infanticide, won the first prize at the just concluded Karimnagar Film Society- organised 5th National Short and Documentary Film Festival.

The second prize was won by D. Mohan Rao who directed Telugu short film Mali Sandhya Velalo, a film about aged parents leading a life of recluse with their children settling down in the USA to make a living.

In the documentary film category, Oriya film Niyamgiri, directed by Suma Jossan, won the first prize while Telugu film Veli Prema, directed by Mallampally Sambashiva Rao, won the second prize.

The special jury award was given to Life@Charminar, which is directed by Snampudi Srilaxmi.

The festival saw the screening of 47 short and documentary films including those in Telugu, Hindi, English, Tamil, Marathi, Bengali and Oriya languages.

The award ceremony was held on 10 April. Information and Public Relations Commissioner C. Parthasarathi gave away the awards, followed by the screening of all the short films and documentaries.

The Festival went on from 8 to 10 April.
