Remake of Umrao Jaan on the cards

Aishwarya Rai

MUMBAI: Muzzafar Ali, who had produced and directed the Rekha-starrer 1981 film Umrao Jaan, is planning to make a sequel.

For the upcoming film, Ali and writer Javed Siddiqui want Rekha to play a cameo. At the end of the original, Umrao Jaan (Rekha) is seen coming back to her kotha without it being shown what is going to happen to her in the English regime.

“Here we have a story in which we have Umrao Jaan as an older and more mature person. But we don‘t know if this would happen or not," wondered Siddiqui.

Umrao Jaan, based on the Urdu novel Umrao Jaan Ada, is based on the life of famous Lucknow courtesan.

Rekha‘s performance as the central character in the film had won her the first National Award.

In 2006, J P Dutta had come out with the remake of Umrao Jaan with Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan in the lead roles. However, the film failed miserably at the box office.
